Writing Precision for Commercial Success

It doesn’t matter which type of writing you are involved in, writing precision will go a long way towards your commercial success. This article explains some of the elements of writing precision and how it can enhance the overall impact of what you write. It also reinforces the necessity to strive for a higher standard of writing so that it becomes automatic when you sit down to write an article, story, thesis, report or any other written document.

What is writing precision?

Writing precision can be defined using a thesaurus. The synonyms for “precision” include:

  • Accuracy
  • care
  • meticulousness
  • correctness
  • Each of these synonyms is an element of precision if applied to writing of any type. Let’s explore each one:

Element 1 – accuracy

In all forms of writing, accuracy is something that should be a given. Inaccurate facts (in non-fiction writing) and inaccuracies in fiction writing can destroy the credibility of the writer. It is surprising how many glitches I see even in published works. This means that editors, also, must apply accuracy to their work.

Absence of precision in writing stands out like a sore thumb as the saying goes. To think that this doesn’t matter shows a reckless attitude to the writing process and outcome.

Element 2 – care

Care is something we should exercise when doing almost any task. With writing, care is equal to the amount of effort a writer puts into a project to ensure the writing project is as precise or accurate as it can be.

Lack of care when writing will result in sloppy content that can be easily identified by readers. It also identifies the writer as somebody who, at best, could do a better job. This has implications that can prevent a careless writer from achieving their full potential.

Element 3 – meticulousness

I absolutely love the word meticulous and the state of being meticulous. I am sure this part of my nature has been responsible for my success in technical writing which requires so much meticulousness that it needs to become an automatic part of how you work.

Some of the synonyms for meticulousness are:

  • Scrupulous
  • Thorough
  • Particular
  • Painstaking
  • fussy
  • The antonym is “careless”.

The synonyms referred to could be construed as meaning that writers doe their job slowly, thus not being very productive. This could be the case for some writers. I consider it is every writer’s duty to acquire these attributes and apply them in such a way that their writing becomes more effective, faster and more precise as a natural way of doing the job.

Element 4 – correctness

Correctness is no different from any of the synonyms stated in this article. Rightness and truth will win every time. Every writer should strive for correctness in everything they write.

Why does writing precision matter?

The antonym for “precision” is “vagueness”. Why would anyone writing anything want it to be vague?

Writing precision matters because it can mean commercial success or failure or anything in between. For instance, if two people of similar qualifications in an organisation are up for a promotion and one has superior writing skills, the better writer will usually score the promotion.

In fiction writing, two writers of similar talent who have submitted a novel to a publisher could be judged by the exactness of their manuscript. This can relate to both the writing and the manuscript presentation.

Summary

Writing precision is something all writers should strive for so that everything they write is the best it can be. It should be a matter of pride and achievement because it really does matter.
